A villager attempts to catch a chicken tossed by a worshiper into the crater of Mount Bromo during the Yadnya Kasada festival. Every year members of the local Tengger population, whose religion is a mixture of Hinduism and Buddhism, toss offerings of rice, fruit, vegetables, and livestock. According to legend the gifts date back to a time when a couple made the offerings in lieu of their 25th child, who was supposed to be sacrificed. --John Roach—Photograph by Sigit Pamungkas/Reuters
